In Koç University, Research, Project Development and Technology Transfer Directorate is the unit responsible for supporting our academics in the preparation of research projects supported by external funds and in cooperation with them, managing those projects. The total number of externally funded projects, starting from January 2004 to September 2013, is 424, with a present value of 99 million TL.

The project titled “Koç University Surface Science and Technology Center – KUYTAM” is the first capacity building grant received by Koç University. This grant is awarded by State Planning Organization with a total budget of 15 million TL, for the period of 36 months starting from May 2010.

In 2012, “Koç University Tüpraş Energy Center (KÜTEM)” was established, with the support of Tüpraş, with a budget of 8 million TL, making up an important portion of that year’s project budget.

Among the projects that became active in 2013, the most significant one is the first ERC Starting Grant of Koç University, received by Assistant Professor Kerem Pekkan from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, with a budget of 5 million TL.

In 2014, Prof. Hakan Urey and Prof. Ozgur Baris Akan were entitled to receive ERC Grants for their projects. The 2,5 million Euro funding, which is the highest funding sum ever received in Turkey from the EC framework programs, will be used by Prof. Hakan Ürey in his research on “The Development of New Display Technologies for Augmented Reality and Three-Dimensional Applications”. The research project aims to customize three-dimensional viewing and display technologies for personal use. Prof. Özgür Barış Akan’s project titled “Communication Theoretical Foundations of Nervous System Towards BIO-inspired Nanonetworks and ICT-inspired Neuro-treatment” has been selected as an ERC Consolidator Grant with a total fund of 1,8 Million Euros over 5 years.

As of September 2013 the number of externally supported projects is 57, with a present value of approximately 20 million TL. With this amount, before the end of2013, the total project budget of 2012 has been reached. As of September 2013, the total number of ongoing projects is 167, with a present value of 52 million TL.
